A new free exhibition has opened at Chichester Cathedral, celebrating the story behind one of its most striking and significant artworks – the John Piper tapestry.
In 1966, the cathedral unveiled what was then considered one of Britain’s most daring post-war art commissions: a vivid and expressive tapestry by renowned artist and printmaker John Piper. The work marked a bold moment in the cathedral’s history, combining modern artistic vision with a centuries-old sacred space.
To honour that legacy, the cathedral is hosting Glowing + Alive, a new exhibition running until Sunday 15 November 2026. The exhibition explores the story behind the tapestry’s creation, shedding light on the people, patrons and ideas that shaped the commission. It also examines the lasting influence the artwork has had on the life, identity and cultural role of the cathedral over the decades.
Visitors can expect an in-depth look at how the tapestry came to be, alongside insights into Piper’s artistic approach and why the commission was considered so groundbreaking at the time. The exhibition aims to appeal to both art enthusiasts and those interested in local history, faith and architecture.
Alongside Glowing + Alive, a programme of talks, events and guided tours will take place throughout the year, designed to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
The exhibition programme is further enriched by Ashes To Fire, a complementary display of new work by contemporary artist Alice Carter, running from 13 February to 5 April 2026. The exhibition creates a visual and thematic dialogue between Carter’s work and Piper’s tapestry, linking past and present artistic responses.
Entry to Chichester Cathedral and the exhibitions is free, although donations are welcome.
