Chichester cathedral's famous peregrine falcons have laid the first egg of the year on Sunday.

The peregrine project has been run jointly by the cathedral, the Sussex Ornithological Society (SOS) and local wildlife enthusiasts David and Janet Shaw who have been observing the birds since 2001.

A live camera on the nest shows the falcon laying the egg, you can watch it here. The live camera link you can find below to follow progress.

Usually, the mother lays around 4 to 5 eggs per year.

The peregrine is a widespread bird of prey, in the family Falconidae. The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop, making it the fastest bird in the world.

A spokesman for the project said they were 'quite surprised' but 'very pleased' at seeing the first egg, which arrived at about 9.55am.
