Cleaning the beaches in Selsey

Three new pipe bins will be installed in Selsey as part of a scheme to reduce fishing and angling debris littering our beaches.

It's the latest Sussex town to install bins for fishing lines, weights and hooks.

Campaigners emphasize the importance of these bins, as discarded fishing lines can easily tangle around birds, small mammals, and marine animals, often causing injury or even death. Hooks left on the ground pose additional dangers, as pets like dogs and unsuspecting beachgoers or children might step on them, resulting in painful injuries. By installing pipe bins, towns encourage responsible disposal of fishing materials, lessening harm to the environment and making local fishing spots safer for everyone.

These bins are part of a larger movement across the UK to tackle litter from fishing waste, with many conservation groups working in partnership with local councils to raise awareness among anglers. They aim to promote sustainable, eco-friendly fishing practices that protect both people and the natural world around them.
