Emergency services responded to a serious collision in Westergate, near Chichester.
The crash involved two vehicles on Westergate Street, close to the junction with Ivy Lane, at about 9.05pm on Friday 16 January.
A white BMW and a red Skoda were involved in the incident, which prompted a significant emergency response.
Eyewitnesses at the scene say they believe occupants of the BMW got out of the vehicle shortly after the collision and ran from the scene.

Sussex Police have issued the following statement:
Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in Westergate Street, Aldingbourne, about 9.05pm on Friday 16 January.
The driver of a Skoda was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The other vehicle involved – a BMW – was abandoned at the scene. Despite an extensive area search, there was no trace of anyone connected to the BMW.
A section of the road was temporarily closed while both vehicles were recovered.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 101 or report it online, quoting serial 1427 of 16/01.
