A series of flood alerts are in force across parts of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex, as high river levels, heavy rainfall and coastal conditions increase the risk of flooding.
A flood alert has been issued for the Monks Brook area, where high river levels on Wednesday could lead to flooding. Around 23 millimetres of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours, with flooding possible from early afternoon. Impacts may include the recreation ground at Fleming Park, high water levels near Kingfisher Road, and surface water flooding on roads in Chandler’s Ford and along Stoneham Way towards the M27. River levels are expected to start falling later on Wednesday evening.
Along the coast, a flood alert remains in place for Climping Seafront. High tides in the early hours of Thursday morning could lead to overtopping of the shingle beach, particularly following damage caused by Storm Goretti earlier this month. Flooding may affect Climping Street Car Park, with water potentially flowing towards properties along Mill Lane. Similar coastal conditions are expected through to Saturday.
River flood alerts are also active across Sussex, including the Western Rother, Upper Arun, River Adur West Branch, River Adur East Branch, Upper Ouse and the Cuckmere River. In these areas, minor flooding could affect roads, fields, gardens and some properties from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, depending on rainfall levels.
Locations that could be impacted include Liss, Fittleworth, Broadbridge Heath, Billingshurst, Coolham, Henfield, Shermanbury, Barcombe Mills, Hellingly and Alfriston. In some areas, river levels are expected to peak at similar levels to flooding seen earlier this month.
Further rain is forecast into Thursday and Friday, meaning river levels and flood risk may remain higher than normal until the weekend. Residents are being advised to monitor conditions closely, take care near rivers and coastlines, and consider activating any flood protection measures where available.
