Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested after reports of a firearm on board a train travelling from Brighton to Gatwick Airport.
Officers said they were alerted to the incident shortly before 1pm on Friday afternoon, after concerns were raised by members of the public.
In a statement, British Transport Police said said:
“We received a report at 12.45pm on 20 February of a man on board a train from Brighton with a firearm.
Sussex Police officers met the train at Gatwick Airport, and arrested a man in possession of two imitation firearms. BTP officers are investigating.”
Officers from Sussex Police were deployed to meet the train as it arrived at Gatwick Airport, where the man was detained.
British Transport Police has now taken over the investigation, as the incident took place on the rail network.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation is being asked to contact British Transport Police.
On X Southern Trains said "Disruption caused by the police dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport has now ended. Services are no longer affected by this problem."
