"Many of our residents can remember the end of the war" VE Day Celebration at Westergate House

Westergate House in Fontwell marked the anniversary of VE Day in style by creating a day to remember on Saturday.

With songs by Vera Lynn and decorations of red, white and blue, the home had an air of merriment and excitement.

Staff dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags and time was spent reflecting and celebrating the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Kay, the Activities Co-ordinator, arranged an agenda of events for the day to ensure everyone had a good time.

She told V2 Radio: "A traditional church service started the day and the national two minute silence as observed.  We listened to Churchill’s iconic speech and reminisced about memories of VE Day.

"Video clips of the celebrations that took place outside Buckingham Palace and all across London were also shown."

Kay had arranged a 40s-style sing-a-long with all the popular favourites.

She also said: "We sung our hearts out, enjoyed tea and cake, and delighted in the sense of occasion.

"Before we knew it, it was supper time, and our chef Konnie had arranged a glorious buffet-style feast with drinks of something special to toast a momentous day."

General Manager, Paul Middleton-Russell, at Westergate House said: “Many of our residents can remember the end of the war and we all know what it meant for our country so we wanted to celebrate the date and listen to our residents memories of the war and the experiences they lived through.”

June, a resident at Westergate House said: “I remember all the family gathering around the radio to listen to Churchill’s speech and it still gives me goosebumps now, such an important date.  It was wonderful to reminisce and to celebrate with all the staff and residents here, we’ve all had such fun and lots of cake!”
