Mental Health Awareness Week in West Sussex - Horsham council urges us to spend more time outdoors

Local councils across West Sussex are trying to encourage residents to spend more time outdoors.

It comes as today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness week.

Horsham District Council says spending time outdoors can significantly improve our self-esteem, boost our mood, and reduce stress and anxiety.

The mental health charity, Mind said: "During this pandemic, millions of us have experienced a mental health problem, or seen a loved one struggle. And we’ve seen that the support we all need just isn’t out there.

"For them, for us and for you – we must take this chance to step up the fight for mental health. That means fighting for change, for fairness, for respect and for life-changing support."

The charity, which provides a local service Worthing, said: "Spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing.

"For example, doing things like growing food or flowers, exercising outdoors or being around animals can have lots of positive effects. It can:

  • improve your mood
  • reduce feelings of stress or anger
  • help you take time out and feel more relaxed
  • improve your physical health
  • improve your confidence and self-esteem
  • help you be more active
  • help you make new connections
  • provide peer support
