New parking zones to go live soon in Chichester

New signage and road markings at one of the extended parking zones in Chichester

Action is being taken by West Sussex County Council to tackle growing pressures on on-street parking in Chichester City in a move that will have a range of benefits for the area.

Works have recently been completed to extend the existing Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) as well as introduce some new waiting restrictions in various areas across the city. Benefits include:

  • Safer parking arrangements near junctions;
  • Protection for through traffic on main arterial routes, especially local bus services;
  • Priority for residents and their visitors who rely upon on-street parking;
  • Less traffic congestion and pollution arising due to vehicles ‘searching’ for parking spaces in uncontrolled areas;
  • Improved arrangements for Blue Badge holders in residential areas; and
  • Safeguards for short-stay parking and deliveries near local neighbourhood shops.

The areas affected by the CPZ extension works are Donnington (new Zone A), Whyke (extension to existing Zone F), The Hornet (extension to existing Zone H), Little Breach (extension to existing Zone N), and Swanfield (new Zone S). New waiting restrictions are also being introduced in various roads such as Lavant Road, Summersdale Road, St James Road, Oving Road and Florence Road. A full list of all the roads affected is given below.

It is anticipated that the new arrangements will become fully operational (with enforcement taking place) from June 1st. Penalty Charge Notices can be issued to vehicles parked incorrectly as soon as enforcement begins so motorists should make sure they understand the restrictions in place and have a permit to park if required.

The CPZ will be administered by Chichester District Council, which also oversees the enforcement of all on-street restrictions across the district on the County Council’s behalf. The district council has set up new online systems to deal with permit applications and residents in Zones A, F, H, N and S are now able to apply for permits.

Full details on how the new CPZ will work, including a map of the areas covered, how to apply for permits and how much they will cost, can be found via by clicking here. This webpage will be updated on a regular basis and there is also an automated phone line which provides important information:01243 534500.

The impact of the new restrictions will be closely monitored and further changes to restrictions or CPZs will be considered by West Sussex County Council in early 2022.
