Passers-by attempted to restrain burglars who broke into popular Chichester restaurant

A burglar was caught red-handed by two men who were walking past the scene of the crime just after 2am yesterday morning (July 22).

The incident took place outside Woodies Bar and Brasserie, on St Pancras in Chichester.

A spokesperson from Sussex Police told  V2 Radio that two men walked past the restaurant and spotted a window had been smashed. 

The men attempted to detain the suspects until officers arrived on scene. A 53-year-old man of no fixed address was then arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

The other suspect ran off. An area search for him was completed but he is still outstanding, and enquiries are ongoing.
