Pier Road Consultation – have your say!

Littlehampton Pier

In the summer of 2020 and 2021, the council temporarily closed Pier Road in Littlehampton to traffic as part of COVID-19 emergency measures.

The road closure was required to allow for social distancing and to keep the public safe from the risk of accidents as people walked or queued on the road.

Funded by central government grants, other councils across the country carried out similar road closures for the same reasons.

While the section of road between the junction of Clifton Road and the former Nelson pub at the junction of South Terrace was closed, road traffic diversions were in place.

Arun District Council are now holding a consultation on Pier Road which has five options to consider. These are closing the road to traffic as a permanent measure, closing the road during the summer months only, keeping the road open to traffic with a one system in place, or keeping the two-way system that currently operates in place and not making any changes.

The results of the consultation will contribute towards informing any future decisions made by Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council and will be published online.

Councillor Andy Cooper, Chair of the Economy Committee at Arun District Council, said: “We’d like to see as many residents, visitors and business owners take part in this consultation as possible so that we can get a clear idea of what people want. The consultation doesn’t take long to complete so we would encourage you to have a say as your opinion will help to shape the future of Pier Road.”

The online consultation https://www.arun.gov.uk/pier-road-consultation  closes at 4pm on Friday 23 September.
