Police are looking for a woman who helped stop a hammer attack in Littlehampton

The attackers fled the scene after being disrupted by a passerby.

Police are seeking a woman who stopped a vicious hammer attack on another woman who was being robbed in a Littlehampton alley.

At about 8.30pm on Wednesday 12 May, the 41-year old victim was talking to a friend in the alleyway between Clifton Road and Pier Road, Littlehampton, when she was approached by a man who offered her drugs, which she refused.

He then began to beat her round the head with a claw hammer while a woman joined in the attack, kicking the victim in the body.

However another woman passing by, described as having a East European accent, told them to stop, which disrupted their attack and the pair made off having stolen £40 cash from the woman.

The victim sustained multiple injuries to her face and head requiring stitches and is also currently deaf in one ear which still requires medical treatment.

The man who wielded the hammer wore a blue zip-up jacket, and blue jeans, and the woman with him wore blue jeans and a grey top.

Detective Constable Jordan Holmes of Chichester CID said: "We would very much like to speak to the woman who bravely disrupted this attack, and we ask her, and anyone else who has any other information, to contact us either online or by calling 101, quoting serial 776 of 14/05."

As a result of police enquiries  man aged 34 and a woman aged 33 have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery. After being interviewed they were released on conditional police bail until 14 June while enquiries continue.
