The skeleton was found by a walker on West Wittering beach this week (Monday 25). Sussex Police have confirmed that they are looking into identifying the body.
Police said a decayed skeleton was unearthed in the mud in Sheepwash Lane, West Wittering.
A spokesman said specialist forensic teams recovered the bones before they were sent for examination.
They have confirmed the remains are human.
“The discovery is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries to identify the bones are ongoing,” the spokesman said.
