Portsmouth City Council has been recognised for leading the way on road maintenance, as National Pothole Day shone a spotlight on the issue.
The city council has been given a top green rating under the Government’s new red, amber, green scorecard system.
Portsmouth has also been confirmed as eligible for £3.7M in incentive funding to help maintain local roads.
This rating is a testament to the Council’s proactive approach, combining long-term preventative measures with high response rates to pothole reports from residents. The council encourages residents to report potholes via the My Portsmouth App or on the Council’s website.
The Council’s highways maintenance partner, Colas, works year-round to keep roads in excellent condition, including rapid pothole repairs. Colas takes a proactive approach to resurfacing heavily used roads to prevent issues progressing, often combining resurfacing works with other road closures to minimise disruption to residents.

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport said:“On National Pothole Day, I’m very proud of Portsmouth’s green rating and the announcement of an extra £3.7Mn “incentive” bonus from the Government for our best practice delivery of Highway Maintenance.
“Portsmouth has a heavily used road network, and by reporting any issues, residents can play a crucial role in keeping our city’s infrastructure safe and reliable. Well-maintained roads are important for road safety but they also help prevent costly vehicle damage.”
