Residents in Brighton and Hove warned about fraudsters claiming to be builders

Police are urging residents to be aware of the scam

Police are urging residents to be aware of a scam in Brighton and Hove in which a pair of fraudsters pretending to be builders claim to have found problems in people’s lofts.

Two men have been reported knocking on people’s doors offering services and later say they have noticed dead pigeons or leaks in the attic. The pair then produce what appears to be wet insulation and offer to fix it for payment.

Officers have been made aware of several recent incidents and have warned residents to be on alert.

People are urged to be vigilant about any unexpected contact from people offering products or services. Always ask to check their ID and if you’re not happy, don’t engage with them.

Never give your bank details or transfer money to those you don’t know or trust, and never give your PIN number or other sensitive information to strangers.

If you are in doubt about a situation, call police or a trusted friend or relative for advice. If something doesn’t sound right, don’t feel pressured to make a snap decision on matters relating to your finances. Take the time to do some research and trust your instincts.
