Santander has announced plans to close 44 branches across the UK, including locations in Gosport and Andover, as part of a major shake-up of its high street presence.
The bank says the decision reflects a significant shift in how customers manage their finances, with around 96 per cent of transactions now carried out online or through mobile banking. Santander says fewer people are visiting branches in person, prompting changes to the way it delivers services.
The proposed closures could put almost 300 jobs at risk nationwide. A consultation process has now begun with affected staff, and the bank says it will work with employees to explore redeployment opportunities where possible.
Santander has stressed that customers will continue to have access to banking services through alternative means, including online, by phone and via remaining branches. The bank also says it is investing in digital services and improving support for customers who need help transitioning away from in-branch banking.
However, the announcement is likely to raise concerns in communities affected by the closures, particularly among elderly customers and those who rely on face-to-face banking services. Campaigners have repeatedly warned that branch closures can leave some residents feeling isolated or excluded from essential financial services.
Santander says it is committed to supporting vulnerable customers and will provide assistance to help them access alternative banking options. The bank has also pointed to the availability of Post Office services for basic banking transactions in many areas.
The closures form part of a wider trend across the UK banking sector, with many major banks reducing their branch networks in response to changing customer behaviour and rising operating costs.
