A grandmother has raised £900 for Sussex Community NHS Charity by asking for donations instead of presents for her 90th birthday.

Mary Wells, who lives in Shoreham, gave the money to the official charity of Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust after collecting it from family and friends during her party in Worthing.

The mother of two and grandmother of two chose to thank the NHS for all of its hard work, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mary’s generosity has delighted the charity’s Fundraising Manager, Rosie Gratwick, who said it was grateful for her kindness towards NHS staff and patients during a challenging time.

“Gestures like Mary’s really bring the community together to raise awareness of our charity and funds to support our NHS services - for that we can’t thank her enough,” she said.

“We wish Mary a very ‘happy birthday’ and are delighted she had such a wonderful celebration with her family and friends while giving back to her local community.”
