Southwick Estate resident consultation continues

Residents of the Southwick Estate are being asked for their views on the future of the estate.

On Saturday 11th June 2022 there will be a drop-in exhibition in the Porter Room at the Southwick Community Centre between 10:30am and 1:30pm.

Architects have designed a range of options for the estate, ranging from repairs and refurbishment through to full redevelopment.

Design boards will show different aspects of the estate from the ground up so they can get a feel for how the area could be transformed.

For those who can't make it, the next pop-up information stall and 'door-knocking' session on the estate will be on Wednesday 15th June 2022 by Rock Close between 11am and 3pm.

The Southwick Estate lies between the railway station and Shoreham Port and contains 248 homes across 13 blocks, which are owned and managed by Adur Homes, as well as two commercial properties owned by third parties.

Significant work and investment is needed to bring the blocks on the estate up to the decent homes standard and the scheme is a priority for Adur.

A project team has been working with residents since July 2021 to review options. Adur District Council would like people living on the Southwick Estate to set out their priorities for the area and have their say on its future by getting involved with the consultation process.

Initial options were presented to tenants and leaseholders in October and November at pop-up events in different locations on the estate, and at an exhibition at Southwick Community Centre.

Residents asked questions about parking, usable green space, the cost of any proposed plans, timescale and ensuring that everyone on the estate got a fair deal.

They also talked about the importance of making sure maintenance issues were tackled.

A Residents' Working Group, set up during the first stage of the project, is working with two independently appointed resident advisors who are on hand to advise the group and all residents and leaseholders on the estate.

A Council spokeswoman said:

“We want to make sure residents have a say on the future of their estate and the surrounding area so that we can provide safe and warm homes and help build a thriving community.”

The Council is also carrying out fire safety work, maintenance and repairs to its existing housing stock alongside the consultation.

The Southwick Estate falls under Adur Homes' capital works programme, which has earmarked more than £5 million annually to spend on its housing stock.
