The Summer Reading Challenge is back at all 36 West Sussex libraries

This year’s theme is called ‘Wild World Heroes’, where readers will join the heroes of Wilderville and their trusted animal companions, who are ready to take action to save the natural world.

It’s free for children and their families to take part and all they need to do is:

  • sign up online and look out for the secret code word,
  • collect a Wild World Heroes map and sticker pack from their local library,
  • borrow some books to read at home or download eBooks and eAudiobooks from the eLibrary.

There’s also a ‘Mini Challenge’ for preschool children, so they can take part too.

Children can decide how many books they want to read as part of the challenge and can read picture books, stories, comics, or information books, as long as it’s something they are reading for fun.

A medal and certificate will be available from Monday 2 August for children to collect once they have completed the challenge. These can be collected from any West Sussex Library.

Duncan Crow, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire and Rescue, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a staple at all of our libraries and vast numbers of children get involved every year.

“Last year, Covid-19 meant the challenge had to be online, but this year I’m delighted to say it is back in our libraries, and staff have worked really hard to ensure families can safely join in, either online or through their local library.

“As well as encouraging a love of reading, this year the challenge is also helping to educate young people about the importance of taking action for the environment and why we should all be taking steps to protect our planet.”

The Wild World Heroes, Summer Reading Challenge 2021, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries, starts on Saturday 10 July and runs through until Saturday 11 September. Children can sign up for free throughout the challenge.

Children will need a West Sussex library card to take part, but it’s free to join online or by visiting your local library.
