The giraffe was not being treated for any illness before passing away

The death of a giraffe is being investigated after it collapsed suddenly on Tuesday.

Known as Irsula, the giraffe passed away at Marwell zoo, Winchester, despite not previously being treated for any illness or showing signs of being unwell.

Staff at the zoo are currently waiting for post-mortem results to determine the cause of her death, sharing a heartfelt tribute on Facebook.

“Irsula was born in 2008 and arrived at Marwell in the summer of 2011. She played an important role in conserving her species, giving birth to one calf, Ruby, in 2012.

"Ruby has since lived at Marwell, alongside Christa and Makeda.

"We’d like to thank all of our guests for their support and understanding while our teams attended to Irsula. She will be greatly missed by us all at the zoo."

The post has since gained over 4,000 likes, with one visitor to the zoo commenting that the giraffe had looked "the picture of health" during their visit on Monday.
