Crews remained on scene at the restaurant on Coastguard Road in Littlehampton until 11.06pm last night ( Thursday) using thermal imaging cameras to monitor hot spots. One crew from Littlehampton and the aerial ladder platform from Worthing returned to the scene this morning at 6.30am to carry out a reinspection. They remain on scene checking for hot spots
At the height of the blaze yesterday a dozen fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were at the scene. People are being asked to avoid the area.
On Thursday a spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 8.51am we were called to a fire at a restaurant in Coastguard Road, Littlehampton. Upon arrival firefighters were met with a fire in the kitchen, which has since spread to the roof.
"We currently have ten fire engines and an aerial ladder platform at the scene, working hard to bring the fire under control. Due to the large smoke plume, we would ask all residents to avoid the area, including the seafront, and to keep their doors and windows closed."
All roads surrounding Coastguard Road have been closed. There are no injuries and everyone has been accounted for.
An investigation will begin when the building is made safe in to the course of the blaze.
Parent company MItchell and Butlers has issued a statement:
“Unfortunately, the Windmill Harvester is temporarily closed following a fire on 10th August. We are currently assessing the damage to determine when we can welcome guests back to dine with us, but in the meantime hope that guests may consider visiting The Britannia Harvester in Lancing or The Barn Harvester in Chichester.
“While we are temporarily closed, where possible our team members may be redeployed to sister restaurants within our group.”
