West Sussex mother fights for Graduated Driving Licences

A mother from West Sussex is calling for urgent changes to the way young people learn to drive, after her 17-year-old son died just a month after passing his test.

Will Radford tragically lost his life in a crash on the A281 in Horsham last June, when he lost control of his car.

Now, his mother, Jane Radford, is campaigning for the introduction of Graduated Driving Licences (GDLs) — a system designed to help new drivers gain experience under safer conditions.

She has joined forces with Sussex Police Chief Constable Jo Shiner, the Senior West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield, and the AA in calling for GDLs to be adopted in the UK.

Despite growing support, the Department for Transport has said it is not currently considering introducing the system, although it takes the safety of young drivers seriously.
