Parents and carers in West Sussex can now apply for secondary school places for children starting in September 2027.

West Sussex County Council says the easiest way to apply is online through its website, with applicants receiving automatic confirmation once their application has been submitted.

The deadline is Saturday, 31 October 2026, and families are being urged to apply on time to give themselves the best chance of being offered one of their preferred schools.

Councillor Sam Raby, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learning, said: “We want every child and young person in West Sussex to have access to a high-quality education that supports them to thrive and succeed.

“To make the process as simple as possible, all the information needed to make an application is available on our website. Additional support is available at our libraries across the county, and there is also the option to complete a paper application form if you do not have access to the online system.

“I would encourage parents and carers to read through all the admissions information carefully before making their application. It is also important to visit school websites or contact schools directly to find out more about their admissions arrangements and any open events for prospective students when deciding on their preferences.”

The council is encouraging families to name three schools on their application and list them in order of preference.

Parents and carers should also include their catchment school, where applicable, if they want it to be considered.

The council warns that choosing a school which is not the nearest or catchment school could affect eligibility for help with school transport.

Living within a school’s catchment area also does not guarantee a place.

Free access to computers and the internet is available at all West Sussex libraries without the need to book.

The library service can also provide digital support, including help with filling in online forms, on 0330 222 3455.

Families unable to apply online can request a paper application form by calling the council’s Pupil Admissions Team on 03330 142903. The same number can be used for questions about the admissions process.

The council says parents who miss the 31 October deadline should still submit an application, as children will not automatically be allocated a school place without one.
