Coastguard responds to small boat heading towards Hampshire coast

A major emergency response was launched on Sunday after reports of a small boat heading towards the Hampshire coast.

HM Coastguard sent lifeboats, a helicopter, an aeroplane and Coastguard Rescue Teams to the incident on 6 September.

Border Force, Border Security Command, Hampshire Police and South Central Ambulance Service were also deployed to the Eastney Landing area according to reports.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: “In response to a report on 6 September of a small boat heading towards the Hampshire coast, HM Coastguard sent lifeboats, an HM Coastguard helicopter, an HM Coastguard aeroplane and HM Coastguard Rescue Teams.

Border Force, Border Security Command, Hampshire Police and South Central Ambulance Service were also sent.”

Official RNLI records show Portsmouth Lifeboat Station launched twice on Sunday afternoon.

The station, based at Ferry Road in Southsea, operates inshore lifeboats covering Portsmouth Harbour and the eastern Solent.

Further information is awaited from the authorities about the number of people involved and where they were taken following Sunday’s operation.
