East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to attend organised bonfire and firework displays rather than stage celebrations at home this autumn.
The service has launched its “Choose Local” message for Bonfire Season, encouraging residents to support organised events in their communities.
Firefighters say they strongly advise against having bonfires or setting off fireworks in gardens or other private spaces, particularly following the recent hot weather.
The service warns that fires can quickly get out of control and spread unpredictably, potentially threatening people, property and nearby open spaces.
Organised events are held across East Sussex throughout the autumn, with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service working with organisers and partner agencies beforehand to provide fire safety advice.
Professional events are also expected to have event management plans and risk assessments in place.
The service says figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents show large public displays are the safest way to enjoy fireworks, with significantly fewer injuries than smaller private gatherings.
However, firefighters acknowledge some people will still choose to hold their own celebrations and are urging anyone who does so to follow the Firework Code.
Only adults should set up, light and dispose of fireworks, while children and young people should always be supervised and kept at a safe distance.
Fireworks should be kept in a closed box, used one at a time and lit at arm’s length before people stand well back.
People are also warned never to return to a lit firework, never carry fireworks in their pockets or throw them, and never use petrol or paraffin on a bonfire.
Before leaving a bonfire, people should make sure it is completely extinguished and the surrounding area is safe.
A series of organised events are scheduled across East Sussex during the coming months.
Crowborough is due to hold an event on 12 September, followed by Fletching on 13 September and Mayfield on 19 September.
Eastbourne’s event is listed for 3 October, with Hastings on 17 October and Lewes on 5 November.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service advises people not to attend the Lewes celebrations unless they are local, because of the large crowds and narrow streets.
The service says event details can change and people should check with organisers before travelling, including information about transport, crowd safety and attendance.
