Energy-saving projects across schools and council buildings in West Sussex are expected to reduce energy bills by more than £63,000 a year.

West Sussex County Council says its Energy Reinvestment Fund is already delivering savings just over a year after it was launched.

Lighting and heating upgrades completed so far are expected to save £63,463 annually and cut carbon emissions by around 74 tonnes each year.

Energy-efficient lighting has been installed at a number of sites, including Arunside Primary School, Crawley Fire Station and Library, Felpham Community College, Haywards Heath Fire Station and Northleigh in Chichester.

Work has also been completed at Hurstpierpoint, Steyning and Bognor Regis libraries, East Preston Fire Station, Chidham Primary School, Ferring Library and Sackville School.

A heating controls project has also been completed at Angmering School.

The council estimates the completed projects will save around 1,608 tonnes of carbon emissions over the lifetime of the technology installed.

Councillor Natasha Davie, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The Energy Reinvestment Fund is a great example of a home-grown West Sussex initiative delivering practical improvements while reducing both energy costs and carbon emissions.

“By reinvesting the savings we make, we can continue supporting more projects across our schools and council buildings. It shows how relatively small improvements at individual sites can add up to a significant environmental and financial impact across the county.”

Six further projects are now being delivered.

The council says once completed and approved schemes are included, annual financial savings are expected to rise to £76,305, with carbon savings increasing to 87 tonnes a year.

Over the lifetime of the technology, the projects are expected to save around 1,925 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The Energy Reinvestment Fund was established using an initial allocation from the council’s capital budget.

Money saved through completed projects is paid back into the fund and then used to support further energy-efficiency improvements.

Projects must meet a number of criteria, including paying back their costs within ten years and delivering sufficient carbon savings over their lifetime.
