The family of a 17-year-old boy who died after being accidentally shot with an air rifle in Hampshire have paid an emotional tribute to their son, describing him as a much-loved, sporty teenager whose organ donations have helped save lives.
Connor Bell, from Tadley, suffered life-threatening injuries during a gathering at an address in Cowslad Drive, Chineham, near Basingstoke, on Saturday 8 November 2025.
He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, where he died two days later, on Monday 10 November.
An inquest held in Winchester on Wednesday 14 October concluded that Connor's death was accidental.
Following the hearing, his family released a moving statement remembering their son and highlighting the dangers associated with air rifles.
They said: “Connor was a much-loved boy, who was very sporty and had a large circle of friends.
“This was a tragic accident which led to the loss of Connor. His friends conducted CPR at the scene, which allowed our son to be an organ donor and save lives. He has since been awarded an Order of St John in recognition of his donation.
“This incident was a tragedy for all the families involved and we are all supporting each other at this incredibly difficult time.
“We would like to remind the public about the potential dangers of air rifles and the care needed to ensure they are safely stored. They should only be used by people with the necessary skills and weapon-handling training.”
Connor's family said the quick actions of his friends, who carried out CPR immediately after the shooting, meant he was able to become an organ donor.
His donation helped save other people's lives, and he was subsequently awarded an Order of St John in recognition of his gift.
The family also stressed that the incident had affected everyone involved and said they were continuing to support one another following the tragedy.
Hampshire Police launched an investigation following the shooting.
As part of the initial enquiries, a 17-year-old boy from Tadley was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The teenager, who is now 18, was subsequently released and will face no further action following discussions with the Crown Prosecution Service and Connor's family.
The coroner's conclusion of accidental death brings the inquest proceedings to a close, almost a year after the incident.
Connor's family hope that by sharing their experience, they can raise awareness of the potential dangers of air rifles and encourage people to take appropriate precautions when storing and handling them.
Their message is a reminder that air rifles, although often regarded differently from other firearms, can cause fatal injuries if not handled safely.
The family have also highlighted the importance of organ donation, with Connor's legacy continuing through the lives he helped save.
