West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service says crews are responding to an incident on Withdean Avenue in Goring-by-Sea, where a garage fire spread to the property's first floor.
People living nearby are being advised to keep their doors and windows closed because of smoke in the area.
Worthing Fire Station is understood to be among the crews in attendance.
Withdean Avenue has also been closed to traffic to allow firefighters to work safely.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 1.29pm this afternoon to reports of a fire involving a property on Withdean Avenue in Goring-by-Sea.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised five fire engines to the scene. Upon arrival firefighters were faced with a fire involving the garage which was spreading to the first floor of the property. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using two jets and three high pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire.
“Residents living nearby are urged to keep their doors and windows closed for the time being due to the amount of smoke in the area.
“Withdean Avenue is closed to traffic to allow firefighters to work safely.”
Residents are being advised to continue following official updates while emergency crews remain at the scene.
No injuries have been confirmed at this time.
