The sister of a Chichester woman who lost a leg following a motorbike crash near Sidlesham has launched a fundraising appeal to help support her recovery.

Helen Thatcher was seriously injured in the collision on 3 September and was taken to Southampton Hospital, where she underwent around 13 hours of surgery.

Doctors attempted to save her leg, but she ultimately required an amputation.

Her sister, Tierney Baxter, has now set up a GoFundMe appeal to help Helen as she begins what her family describes as a long and difficult journey of recovery and adapting to life after losing her leg.

Tierney said the money would be used towards equipment, travel and rehabilitation costs as Helen rebuilds her life following the accident.

Writing on the fundraising page, Tierney described Helen as her older sister and best friend and said the accident had “changed her life forever”.

She said Helen would need support from family and friends throughout her recovery and encouraged people who were unable to donate to share the appeal instead.

The fundraiser was launched on 5 September with a target of £1,600.

Tierney said: “Helen is the strongest person I know who is also my best friend.”

The family hopes donations will help meet some of the additional costs Helen is expected to face during her rehabilitation and recovery.
