A distinctive stained-glass window at Eastbourne Town Hall has been restored as part of ongoing work to preserve the Grade II listed building.
The circular “bullseye” window, positioned above the portico at the front of the Town Hall, was found to need specialist repairs after movement in the building’s façade caused the surrounding stonework to distort.
That movement had also left the stained patterned glass panels warped.
As part of the restoration, the stone framing was carefully removed and reset to its original position.
The glass panels were also restored, with new lead cames fitted to strengthen the window while retaining the original glass.
The council says the work has protected an important architectural feature of the building while preserving its historic character.
Eastbourne Town Hall is more than 140 years old and remains one of the town’s most recognisable civic landmarks.
Councillor Jenny Williams, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Place, said: “Eastbourne Town Hall is one of the town's most recognisable and historic buildings, and it is important that we continue to invest in its care and preservation.
“The restoration of this beautiful stained-glass window has safeguarded an important architectural feature for future generations while respecting the building's historic character.
“I am delighted that the original glass has been retained and restored as part of this specialist conservation work.”
The restoration forms part of Eastbourne Borough Council’s wider programme of maintenance and conservation work aimed at protecting the heritage and structural integrity of the Town Hall.
