Littlehampton Bonfire Society is appealing for 20 more volunteers to help marshal this year’s event on Saturday 24 October.
The annual celebration includes a torchlit procession through the town, followed by the lighting of a large bonfire and a fireworks display.
Organisers say strict health and safety guidance means a set number of marshals are needed to help keep the event safe for those taking part and for spectators.
Marshals must be aged 16 or over, but no previous experience is required.
Their role includes lining the procession route, helping to manage road closures and access points, directing members of the public and preventing people from walking into the parade or picking up smouldering torches.
Volunteers will be given high-visibility clothing, identification and information about their role, with each person allocated a position along the route.
For every ten marshals there will also be a senior marshal available to offer help and advice.
This year, volunteers will also be offered the opportunity to attend a briefing before the event, although organisers say all the information they need will be included in a marshalling pack.
Each marshal will be given emergency contact details covering situations including lost children, casualties and police emergencies.
The society says volunteers should be comfortable speaking to members of the public and may sometimes need to be assertive.
Organisers added that marshals work in pairs and as part of a wider team, with support available throughout the evening.
The society says volunteering also provides a front-row view of the event while helping ensure the procession, bonfire and fireworks display can go ahead safely.
