People in Sussex and Hampshire are today remembering two women from the region who were killed in the September 11 terror attacks in the United States.
Today marks 25 years since the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001.
Among the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives were 30-year-old Melanie de Vere and 26-year-old Karlie Rogers.
Melanie de Vere grew up on Hayling Island and later studied in Portsmouth before going on to work in the financial sector.
She was attending a conference on the 106th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center when the building was struck.
Karlie Rogers studied at the University of Sussex, graduating in 1997.
She was also attending the same conference in the North Tower when the attacks took place.
Both women were killed when the tower collapsed.
Their deaths meant the tragedy was felt directly in communities across Hampshire and Sussex, where their lives and achievements are still remembered 25 years later.
Across the United States, commemorations are being held today for those who died in the coordinated terrorist attacks.
Hijacked passenger planes were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon near Washington.
A fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the plane.
A quarter of a century on, Melanie de Vere’s ties to Hayling Island and Portsmouth and Karlie Rogers’ time at the University of Sussex remain part of how the attacks are remembered in our region.
