West Sussex County Council is asking residents, parents and school staff for their views on proposals to expand Yapton CE Primary School.
The plans would increase the school’s capacity from 315 pupils to 420, in response to forecasts showing a gradual rise in the number of children expected to need primary school places locally.
The county council says the increase is largely being driven by new housing development in the area.
Yapton CE Primary School currently caters for children aged four to 11 and operates as a one-and-a-half form entry school, offering 45 places in each year group.
Under the proposals, it would become a two-form entry school, with 60 places available in each year group from the start of the 2028 to 2029 academic year.
The expansion would be funded through Section 106 developer contributions.
Section 106 funding is money provided by property developers as part of planning agreements to help pay for local infrastructure and services linked to new developments, including schools, roads, parks and community facilities.
A consultation has now opened for pupils, parents and carers, staff, governors, local residents and other interested parties to comment on the proposals.
Councillor Sam Raby, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learning, said:
“We are committed to providing enough school places so that children across West Sussex have the best start in life.
“The proposed expansion of Yapton CE Primary School would ensure children from the local community are able to access high-quality primary education close to home now and into the future.”
The consultation closes at 11.55pm on Sunday 20 September.
