A Portsmouth community allotment which supports people with a range of needs has celebrated the end of the summer season and the completion of more than £10,000 worth of improvements.
Volunteers and participants gathered at Milton Piece Community Allotment in Locksway Road on Wednesday 2 September to mark the work carried out during the summer and the completion of accessibility upgrades supported by Portsmouth City Council.
The improvements include upgraded pathways and better shelter, designed to make the site more accessible and practical throughout the year.
The allotment provides a supportive outdoor space where people can meet others, grow produce, learn practical skills and improve their wellbeing.
Between April and June this year, 193 people used the allotment, including people recovering from addiction, people with learning disabilities and people with dementia.
A total of 710 visits were recorded during the three-month period.
The allotment received just over £10,000 towards the improvements, with £5,133 awarded through the Community Infrastructure Levy and the same amount match-funded from the Leader of the Council's reserve funds.
The Community Infrastructure Levy allows councils to raise money from developers carrying out new building projects, with funding then available to support improvements to local communities.
Projects can include work on community buildings, open spaces, planting and biodiversity schemes and public art.
Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, joined volunteers and participants at the allotment.
He said: "The allotment is a haven for many people and I am pleased to see the positive effect it has on people's self-esteem, confidence and belonging. I'd encourage anyone to get involved in our community groups if they are able, they are a great way to combat loneliness and are really good for people."
Jason, who works with Intuitive Thinking Skills, a recovery service in Portsmouth, said the allotment had helped support his wellbeing and recovery.
He said: “Attending the Milton Piece Community Allotment has supported with my stress levels, pressure and created feelings of belonging, laughter and a sense of humour. As a platform to support recovery, it’s an opportunity to visualise greenery and support produce being grown which supports others. The recent upgrades have provided more accessible pathways and improved shelter for the winter where we can cook food and bond together.”
Portsmouth City Council is encouraging people interested in meeting others to consider joining one of its community groups.
A range of indoor and outdoor activities are available free of charge and are open to everyone.
