‘Noisy’ overnight resurfacing roadworks in Landport and Portsea will take place from now until mid-November, the council has said.
Portsmouth City Council’s transport contractor Colas will carry out resurfacing works at five locations in the South-West of the city.
Motorists, cyclists and residents are being advised to plan ahead as the works will affect several key routes in the city.
The works will take place between September 28 and November 13, 2026, during overnight hours of 9pm to 5am.
The locations include Anglesea Road and St Michael’s Road (September 28 to October 12), Marketway Roundabout (October 26 to 28), Marketway westbound (October 27 to November 4), Hope Street Roundabout (November 2 to 4) and Hope Street (November 3 to 13).
Councillor Peter Candlish, cabinet member for transport at Portsmouth City Council, said: “These are some of the city’s busiest roads and it’s important we maintain them before their condition deteriorates.
“This work is part of our long-term, preventative approach to maintaining Portsmouth’s road network, which was recently recognised by the government’s only triple green rating for road maintenance on the South Coast.
“While we know there will be some temporary disruption, carrying out the works overnight helps minimise the impact on residents, businesses, motorists and emergency services.”
Temporary road closures and signed diversion routes will be in place throughout the works.
Traffic leaving the city during Anglesea Road resurfacing will be diverted via Winston Churchill Avenue, Holbrook Road, Lake Road and Commercial Road.
An extended diversion via Rudmore Roundabout, Kingston Crescent, Kingston Road, Fratton Road and Lake Road will operate during Marketway Roundabout resurfacing from October 26 to 28.
The Park Road pedestrian crossing will close on a few nights, with a temporary crossing provided nearby. Signed diversions for cyclists will also be in place where needed.
The council said some of the works, particularly the removal of road surfaces, “will be noisy”, but it will work to “keep disruption to a minimum wherever possible”.
