Six people have been arrested after more than 100 protesters gathered in Gosport as migrants arrived by small boat.

The Home Office says 149 people were brought ashore by the RNLI following a crossing of the English Channel.

Police were involved in a stand-off with demonstrators lasting several hours on Sunday night, with flares also reported to have been set off.

Those brought ashore have since been taken to a migrant processing centre in Kent.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was working with partner agencies following the small boat crossing and had deployed officers to Gosport to support the emergency response at sea and facilitate peaceful protest.

Police said a number of additional powers have been introduced in Gosport and Portsmouth in an effort to protect local communities and those taking part in protests.

Under Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986, anyone seeking to gather in Gosport is being directed to a designated area within Walpole car park.

The order remains in place until 4pm on Monday, 5 October, with police warning that failure to comply with the conditions is a criminal offence and could result in arrest.

Police have also introduced powers covering Gosport and Portsmouth relating to the wearing of face coverings during protests.

Officers said Section 158 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026 prohibits face coverings being used to conceal a person's identity during protest activity.

Powers under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 also allow officers to require people to remove masks or other items being used to hide their identity.

Both measures remain in place until 4 pm on Monday.

A dispersal order has also been introduced across Gosport under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

It gives officers the power to direct someone to leave the area and prevent them returning for a specified period.

The dispersal order will remain in force until 7 am on Tuesday, 6 October.

Police said anyone refusing to comply with a direction under the order could be arrested.

The force said: “We know how these incidents can impact local communities and are aware of a group of people gathering in Gosport.”

It added that officers had been deployed to support partner agencies in the event of an emergency at sea and “to facilitate peaceful protest”.
