Specially trained police dogs are being deployed across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to help identify people carrying substances linked to spiking offences.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit have launched the new capability for use in the night-time economy.
The dogs have been trained to detect drugs commonly associated with spiking, including substances carried in small quantities and in liquid form.
Six dogs — Major, Maverick, Puma, Dusty, AJ and Reggie — have undergone specialist training and will support officers during proactive operations across both force areas.
The scheme forms part of wider work to tackle violence against women and girls and improve safety in towns and cities at night.
Police say the dogs will be used as students return to universities for the start of the academic year and more people spend time in bars, clubs and other night-time venues.
The capability has also been recognised by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and incorporated into the national police dog portfolio.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary says reports of spiking remain relatively low, but prevention remains a key part of its approach.
Chief Constable Alexis Boon said: “Everyone should be able to enjoy a night out without fear of becoming a victim of crime. While reports of spiking remain relatively low, we know the impact on victims can be significant, which is why we are committed to being proactive in preventing offences before they happen.
“This pioneering capability demonstrates how we are continually evolving our policing approach to identify and disrupt those who seek to harm others.
“These specially trained dogs provide an additional tool for officers working in our towns and cities, helping us to target offenders, support our wider work to tackle violence against women and girls, and keep people safe in the night-time economy.”
Police say anyone carrying substances linked to spiking offences should expect officers to take action.
