People supported by Chichester homelessness charity Stonepillow are preparing to take on the Chichester Half Marathon as part of their recovery journeys.
Fourteen runners will represent the charity at the event on 4 October, including three Stonepillow clients and three members of staff.
Among those taking part are Lewis and Shaun, who are both being supported by Stonepillow’s recovery service, Sands.
Shaun said Stonepillow had helped him through some of the most difficult periods of his life, including his recent journey to sobriety.
He said: “Stonepillow supported me through some of my toughest times.”
Lewis, who moved into Stonepillow in May, said the charity and its Sands service had given him a second chance and helped him rebuild his confidence.
Both men have taken up running as part of developing healthier routines during their recovery.
Shaun is three-and-a-half months sober, while Lewis said he is four months clean and sober.
The pair have been training for the half marathon and Shaun says they have already completed the full distance during practice sessions.
Lewis said: “I owe so much to the staff for their endless patience and 24/7 support. Running alongside my recovery peers is a small way to show my gratitude.”
Shaun added: “It’s my way of giving back to the incredible charity that helped get my life back on track.”
Stonepillow says rebuilding life after homelessness can take time and is rarely straightforward, particularly for people also dealing with trauma or addiction.
The charity is encouraging people to support its runners along the route or visit the Stonepillow stand on the day.
