The University of Chichester has invested more than £5,000 in environmentally friendly film production equipment, giving students access to professional-standard sets while helping to reduce the environmental impact of filmmaking.
The investment forms part of the university's recently launched Film Production degree and will allow students to create a wide range of realistic scenes using innovative, recyclable materials.
The new set flats, which are used to construct walls and interior spaces for film and television productions, have been manufactured by Vectar Sets using 100% recyclable cardboard.
Unlike traditional wooden sets, the cardboard structures are lightweight, making them easier to move, assemble and reconfigure for different productions.
The university says the new equipment will help students develop practical filmmaking skills while introducing them to more sustainable production techniques increasingly being adopted across the creative industries.
The investment adds to the University of Chichester's existing Film School facilities, which include a green-screen stage, motion capture technology, television and film production studios and a large-scale sound stage.
Darren Mapletoft, Senior Lecturer and Programme Co-ordinator, said: "Our new set provides students with so many opportunities to create a variety of scenes and production environments.
"The flats are extremely lightweight compared to our traditional wooden stage flats, making it quick and easy to reconfigure sets. We can also combine the flats with our large portable monitors and giant video wall to create realistic views through windows and doorways, adding to the professional feel of our productions.
"This investment gives students hands-on experience with the latest industry practices while also supporting more sustainable approaches to filmmaking."
Students studying the new degree will also have access to a 250-square-metre, three-storey sound stage, which the university says is one of only a handful in the UK capable of accommodating large-scale productions and even a professional orchestra.
A dedicated green-screen and motion capture studio allows students to explore visual effects, virtual production and modern screen storytelling techniques.
Professional television and film production studios, complete with green room facilities, also provide students with experience of working in broadcast-ready environments.
Alongside the production facilities, students can use specialist post-production resources, including editing suites, a Soho-standard dubbing and mastering suite and a screening room where completed projects can be showcased.
The university says the investment is designed to prepare students for careers in film, television and the wider creative industries, while encouraging the next generation of filmmakers to consider the environmental impact of their productions.
By combining modern filmmaking technology with recyclable materials, the University of Chichester hopes to demonstrate how professional-quality productions can be created using more sustainable methods.
