Residents across West Sussex are being urged to prepare for possible flooding this winter, as the county council invests more than £32,000 tackling long-standing drainage problems in a local village.
As part of Flood Action Week, West Sussex County Council is encouraging households to check their flood risk, sign up for warnings and take steps to protect their homes.
The warning comes as more than £32,000 has been approved through the council's Operation Watershed programme to address flooding along Honeybridge Lane and Pepper's Lane in Ashurst.
Both roads have regularly flooded during heavy rainfall, causing problems for residents, motorists and families travelling to Ashurst Primary School.
Improvements include a new culvert, upgraded roadside drainage and highway resurfacing to help prevent future flooding.
Councillor Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
"While no organisation can completely prevent flooding, we continue to invest in measures that improve resilience across West Sussex and reduce the risk of local flooding wherever possible."
Meanwhile, Councillor Natasha Davie, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, warned that flooding can happen anywhere, not just near rivers or coastal areas.
She said: "Flooding can affect anyone and often happens more quickly than people expect. We want residents to feel informed and prepared before winter. By understanding their flood risk and taking action now, people can better protect their homes, families and communities from the impacts of flooding."
The council is recommending residents prepare emergency kits, create household flood plans and consider protective measures such as flood barriers.
An online guide offering advice on preparing for flooding, dealing with emergencies and accessing support is available on the West Sussex County Council website.
