Ten young people from Oak Grove College have celebrated successfully completing a special firefighting programme organised by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
The students, aged between 12 and 13, took part in the latest BLAZE course, designed to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and communication skills among young people with a range of complex needs.
The programme combines practical firefighting activities with personal development challenges, helping participants build valuable life skills while experiencing what it takes to work as part of a fire and rescue team.
During the course, pupils were given the opportunity to take part in simulated firefighter exercises, including running hoses and using water jets.
They also completed team-building challenges, first aid training and communication activities aimed at improving their social and emotional development.
The programme is designed to encourage young people to step outside their comfort zones, strengthen relationships and develop greater independence.
A special passing-out parade was held at Lancing Fire Station on Friday (2 October), where families and friends gathered to celebrate the students' achievements.
Area Manager Adrian Carter attended the ceremony and presented certificates to the ten young people who successfully completed the course.
Speaking after the event, he praised the students for their hard work and determination.
He said: "It was a privilege to attend the pass out parade and celebrate the achievements of these remarkable young people.
“Over the course of the BLAZE programme, the young people have shown determination, resilience, teamwork and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. The confidence and skills they have developed will benefit them for years to come.
“Every student should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, and I would like to thank our team of instructors, the staff at Oak Grove College, and the families who have supported them throughout their journey."
The BLAZE initiative forms part of West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service's targeted education programmes, which aim to support young people's wellbeing, promote personal resilience and encourage positive relationships within local communities.
By combining practical fire service activities with educational exercises, the programme helps participants develop skills they can carry into school, home life and their future careers.
