Huge blaze at recycling centre causes travel disruption in south London

A huge fire at a recycling centre in south London has caused disruption to rail travel.

Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines are tackling the blaze at a recycling centre in Bermondsey.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has declared a major incident.

It said firefighters attended the scene after receiving multiple calls reporting the fire around 5.30pm on Monday.

Two of its 32m turntable ladders have also been deployed to fight the fire from above.

Pictures and footage from the scene showed dark clouds of smoke billowing over nearby buildings.

The LFB has urged local residents to keep their windows and doors closed.

The fire has caused major disruption to rail services at London Bridge railway station, National Rail said.

Southeastern and Thameslink trains going to or through London Bridge may be cancelled or diverted, or only run part of their normal route.

Passengers planning to travel from London Bridge on Monday evening were advised to find an alternative route.

Passengers were also advised to avoid London Charing Cross.

Disruption was expected to last until the end of the day, National Rail said.
