A man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to sell Morgan McSweeney's stolen mobile phone.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Peckham, south London, on suspicion of selling Sir Keir Starmer's former chief of staff's phone after it was stolen last October.

Mr McSweeney called 999 on 20 October last year to report his "government device" had been stolen.

He said the thief swiped the phone from his hand and he gave chase but the man, who was riding a bike, got away.

Mr McSweeney told the police call handler it was stolen on Belgrave Street in Westminster, but it was taken down as Belgrave Street in Tower Hamlets. Sir Keir's then-top aide was actually on Belgrave Road in Westminster.

A police crime reference number was given to Mr McSweeney and the case was closed, but it was reopened after details of the incident were disclosed recently.

A Met Police spokesperson told Sky News: "Officers investigating the theft of a mobile phone in Belgrave Road, Pimlico, on 20 October 2025 have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

"The arrest took place on Wednesday, 29 April at an address in Peckham. The man was taken into police custody and later bailed.

"He is suspected of receiving the phone after it was stolen and then selling it on. He is not suspected of any involvement in the original theft.

"The phone has not been recovered."
