West Sussex County Council is prepared to use compulsory purchasing powers to deliver part of the A29 realignment scheme.

The scheme to build a 4.34km road to the east of Eastergate, Westergate and Woodgate villages came about due to amount of congestion clogging the current A29.

The first phase of work includes the construction of a roundabout on Barnham Road. To get it done, the council needs to either buy the land on which it will be built or have that land dedicated for highways use.

Discussions are being held with landowners and developers of adjacent housing schemes, but if an agreement cannot be reached, the council will have another option.

The decision to allow officers to publish the Compulsory Purchase Order and ‘take any necessary action to secure the land either by agreement or compulsion’ was taken by Joy Dennis, cabinet member for Highways & transport, on Wednesday (March 4).
