Bus contracts renewed in Hampshire

More than 20 bus contracts have been renewed for the next four years for a value of £13.5 million.

The contracts will ensure the continuation of the services in areas such as Fareham, Gosport or Havant.

Hampshire County Council has approved spending £13.5 million to renew 23 bus contracts in the region and continue supporting bus services that provide access to work, education, retail, and health.

The total annual value of all these services is around £1.967 million. In summary, the new contracts will incur an additional yearly cost of £228,490 compared to the existing contracts.

The estimated total cost is £13.5 million, which accounts for a maximum contract period of six years. The fees for the first year will rise by five per cent each subsequent year.

The new contractual arrangements include school transport routes while ensuring that the current level of service is maintained.

The county council indicates that the proposed contracts offer “the best value which can be achieved at this time, given the challenging bus operation environment of increased costs and lower passenger numbers.”

At her decision day (May 16) cabinet member for highways and passenger transport, Lulu Bowerman said: “I’m very happy to support this.

“It’s really good to see competitive tendering is taking place for the provision of these passenger transport services across the county that will ensure the best value for money while obviously incorporating the school transport routes where possible, so I welcome this new approach and that the services will remain at the same level as well.”
