Charity a big winner with Rocks

Charity and community spirit were the winners when Bognor Regis Town kicked off the new football season at Nyewood Lane on Saturday.

While the team, bossed by manager Jack Pearce and coach Robbie Blake, managed to gain a point with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Bishop's Stortford, there was a victory to celebrate off the pitch.

A big winner on the sun-kissed afternoon was the Apuldram Centre, who are the first team shirts sponsors for the season. An invite from Bognor Rocks in the Community saw organisers set up a stall near the main entrance turnstiles so supporters could buy delicious homegrown produce as well as jams, chutneys, cakes and biscuits!

And music was provided by busker Dave Edwards, while match sponsor 4Sight Vision Support raised donations through a bucket collection.

Rocks general manager Simon Cook said the club was delighted with the events. He added: "It was a smashing day and the overall feeling was that we enhanced the belief that at heart, we are very much a community club.

"We were thrilled to welcome our guests from the Apuldram Centre and I'm told the response to the various activities was excellent. And to see all the smiles was especially heartening. With the Apuldram Centre sponsoring our shirts, it provided a great opportunity of showcasing all of the brilliant work they do. As an independent registered charity, they work to support adults with learning disabilities, and have delivered services in Chichester and surrounding area for 30 years.

"Their services include a dedicated day centre offering meaningful and enterprising daytime occupational activities such as: horticultural, both on and off site; woodwork; cookery and arts and crafts. They also support a number of people in the Chichester area to live independently in their own tenancies.

"Thanks to everyone who managed to make it such a special day.”
