Chichester police have been praising witnesses who came forward to help with a conviction of a man back in 2020.

They convicted of a man for assault in Chichester in December 2020, when officers received a report of a man being punched at a Tesco Supermarket on Fishbourne Road East.

It's reported the victim originally said that he'd accept a letter of apology for the assault from the suspect - meaning the courts wouldn't have had to have been involved,

However, when the suspect attended a voluntary interview, he alleged the victim had in fact assaulted him.

After a witness had previously come forward to provide a statement supporting the victim’s account, he was charged and found guilty in court just last month.

On December 22, 2021 having already been to two hearings that year, he was ordered to pay £650 in compensation to the victim of the assault.

On Facebook, Chichester Police made a post, quoting the investigating officer, PC Pearson #EA488. He said: “This case illustrates why witnesses coming forward is so important and we thank all of them who do. Ultimately we wouldn’t have had such a positive outcome for the victim without the witness providing their statement and attending court, even though they were summonsed a year after the incident took place.”
