Chichester to welcome famed dance performer who worked with Stranglers and BBC

An award-winning performer who is widely celebrated for shaping British contemporary dance will be hosting her first masterclass in Chichester next week.

Famed choreographer Liz Aggiss has – for the last 40 years – helped to redefine modern dance through her live performances with punk legends the Stranglers and for BBC film and television.

Ms Aggiss will be performing from her renowned repertoire and speaking about her career at the forefront of contemporary dance on Tuesday 9th November.

The event, which is open to all, is hosted at the University of Chichester as part of its new series of public lectures led by some of the UK’s most acclaimed dancers.

Cathy Childs, who oversees the dance degrees at the University, said: “Liz makes uncompromising, challenging, feminist work which blurs the boundaries between high art and popular culture and has a distinct visual aesthetic, resisting the ‘authority’ of formal conventions.

“We are delighted to welcome her to our University to speak about her incredible career, her award-winning choreography, and the stars that she has collaborated with.”

Across her 40-year career, Brighton-based performer Ms Aggiss has received numerous international awards, most notably for early-2000s film Motion Control – which was among the first to pioneer new camera technology to change the perceptions of its viewers.

The open lecture is part of a new collaboration between the University’s dance department and Arts Council England.

The venture, across 2021 and 2022, intends to make dance more accessible for the community and open live performances for audiences in the post-Covid era.

The talk, which starts at 6:30pm, is held in the University’s dance theatre space on Bishop Otter campus in Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 6PE.

Tickets cost £12 each or £6 for concessions and NHS staff, with drinks included.
