Choir donates to £2,450 to local NHS charity

Choir Coro Nuovo have donated £2,450 to Sussex Community NHS Charity, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s official charity, after raising the money by holding a concert.

The Big Event - NHS Celebration Concert' took place at the New Bury Theatre, Hurstpierpoint College, with Managing Chair of Coro Nuovo, Catherine Kent, describing the evening as “a wonderful way of getting back into live music”.

She said: “The evening was dedicated to NHS staff and those frontline workers in the caring community in Mid Sussex who have given so much of their time during the pandemic.

“We wanted to say ‘thank you’ and so the Big Event NHS Concert was dedicated entirely to them!”

The concert involved a 43-member choir, led by Music Director and opera singer Andrew Rees, two Sussex Young Musicians, Maria Luc and Leo Popplewell, and a dozen members of Hurst Chapel Choir.

The first half of the event was dedicated to a classical repertoire including Jacob Arcadelt’s Ave Maria, Frederic Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major and John Rutter’s The Lord is My Shepherd.

The second half involved contemporary pieces such as Charlie Chaplin’s Smile, Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World and Paul McCartney’s Blackbird.

The concert concluded with Over the Rainbow and You’ll Never Walk Alone, songs adopted by the NHS during the pandemic.

Catherine said: “Unfortunately, due to COVID and isolating, our audience wasn’t as large as we had hoped; but those who came loved it and we had a lot of fabulous feedback.

“With kind sponsors and a grant from Mid Sussex District Council we were able to donate to two local charities – Sussex Community NHS Charity and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action. Both are heavily involved in helping our community, particularly during COVID, and we wanted the money to go to help improve and make a difference to them while they dedicate themselves to others.”

The funds donated to Sussex Community NHS Charity from the concert, held on 20 November last year, will be shared between Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s community nursing, specialist, and responsive services teams in Mid Sussex, helping them improve health and well-being.
