A drink-driver has been banned from driving after crashing into a McDonald’s restaurant on the A24 in West Sussex.

A drink-driver has been banned from driving after crashing into a McDonald’s restaurant in West Sussex.

The VW Golf is said to have caused extensive damage to the building at Buck Barn Services on the A24 when he drove into the Drive Thru back on November 26, 2021.

The 19-year-old plumber, Taylor Steel, was disqualified from driving for two years after the crash after failing a breath test.

According to police reports, he had 101mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – which is nearly three times the legal limit of 35mcg.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the teenager had taken the term “drive thru” restaurant “a bit too literally”.

He added: “In police interview, Steel admitted he had been drinking beer at a pub before the incident occurred, and added he didn’t know why he drove the car or where he intended to go.”

As well as the driving ban, Steel was sentenced at Crawley Magistrates’ Court to a 12-month community order requiring him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Police have also reminded the public the consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which could include:

  • A minimum 12 month ban;
  • An unlimited fine;
  • A possible prison sentence;
  • A criminal record, which could affect your current and future employment;
  • An increase in your car insurance costs;
  • Trouble travelling to countries such as the USA.
